ReNew Crew: Empowering Change Through Employment And Opportunity

ReNew Crew is a supportive employment social enterprise launched by Anawim Housing that aims to remove barriers to employment and provide opportunities for program participants to gain valuable life and employment skills. Unlike other supported employment programs, ReNew Crew does not require individuals to obtain any certifications or take classes to participate. Individuals are directly placed into the workforce, where they assist our maintenance team with apartment cleanings, painting, groundskeeping, and other light maintenance tasks. This approach aligns with Anawim Housing's Housing First and harm reduction practices, ensuring participants receive the support they need to remain employed, even through challenges like mental health or substance use relapses.

Jennifer, our new ReNew Crew Manager, plays a pivotal role in guiding the team. After undergoing surgeries, she sought to re-enter the workforce, which lead her to join ReNew Crew. She started out as a typical member, but her leadership skills led her to being promoted to manager. In her role, she emphasizes team-building skills and strives to be a strong teammate who helps others stay focused on tasks. Jennifer acknowledges that while things can be hectic, she always tries to make sure the team is making the best of their resources and skills while also maintaining a drama-free and enjoyable environment for everyone.

Jennifer provides instructions to her team for them to fulfill everyday assignments, such as taking out trash at all facilities or performing unit turns. ReNew Crew also assists with resident moves, handle maintenance and cleaning tasks, and support various needs, including setting up rooms at our newest property, Monarch Apartments. Through this work, Jennifer has learned the importance of patience and recognizes that people can collaborate effectively despite their differences. She hopes to help individuals gain useful work and social skills that they can potentially use elsewhere.

ReNew Crew not only offers employment but also fosters personal growth, stability, and a sense of purpose among its members. By providing a supportive work environment, it helps individuals build positive employment references, expand their resumes, and develop skills that can lead to future opportunities.
