In June of 2018, Anawim Housing's program team attended the 2018 Iowa/Nebraska Homelessness Symposium: Thinking Beyond the Shelter. The symposium brought together homeless service professionals from across Iowa and Nebraska to network and expand their knowledge of homeless policy initiatives, programs and best practices. Anawim's Director of Program Services, Cynthia Latcham, Program Manager Dan McBee, and Primary Health Care's Margo Miller presented together at one of the sessions during the Symposium.
Their presentation was titled "Housing First: Innovation and Collaboration to Achieve Solutions Based Programming."
Anawim Housing supports and practices the Housing First model, which states:
The presentation sparked interest for several in attendance and has since led to many community member conversations about how we can better serve the highest need. Through collaboration, we can find better ways to help the most vulnerable in our community.
In early July, Polk County Housing Trust Fund awarded Anawim Housing $60,000 in funds to directly support and sustain our Shelter Plus Care program. The program currently serves over 160 individuals and families who have been homeless or who were chronically homeless and were referred to Anawim Housing through Primary Health Care's Centralized Intake.
