Anawim has been fortunate to have some extra help over the past 2017-2018 school year thanks to our wonderful student intern, Brittnay Freeman. As a first year student at Drake, she became involved with Drake's Engaged Citizen Corps Program and was paired with Anawim Housing as the nonprofit she would work with throughout the year. I asked Brittany a few questions regarding her time here:
1) What have you enjoyed most about interning with Anawim?
"I've enjoyed learning people's stories the most. There are so many different people with different lived experiences in this world, and it is so easy to forget about that and get wrapped up in your own world/life. Working with Anawim has allowed me to see that more clearly."
2) What's been one of your favorite projects to be a part of at Anawim?
"Any event where I was able to learn more about the residents was one that I enjoyed. A favorite memory was speaking with and helping Anawim program tenants paint doors for the Opening Doors Ceremony."
3) After your internship ends, what's next?
"Right now, I am a double major in Law, Politics, and Society and Anthropology and Sociology. This will hopefully lead me to law school where I can continue my work with advocacy and representing social justice issues. Next year, I will be serving as a Service Learning Ambassador in the Community Engaged Learning Office at Drake, connecting community partners with Drake's student body."
4) What's your favorite part of going to school and interning in the Drake Neighborhood?
"I really love being downtown! I come from a larger city so it reminds me of home. There is so much culture and so many cute neighborhoods to be explored in Des Moines."
Thank you Brittany for your time spent with Anawim - we wish you the best in your future endeavors!
