Shelter Plus Care

Shelter Plus Care is a publicly funded housing program managed by Anawim Housing in cooperation with the Housing Services Department of the City of Des Moines. The program provides rental assistance for homeless individuals and families where an adult suffers from serious mental illness, chronic substance abuse or an AIDS-related disease. At the close of 2008, Shelter Plus Care served nearly 400 children and adults in 200 rental units throughout the metropolitan area.

All participants in the program must be referred by a case management agency with which Anawim Housing has a service contract. Participants establish personal goals with their case management and housing staff as they work toward self-sufficiency.
